National Principals Month is celebrated annually in October. At University View Academy (UVA), our dedicated principals play a pivotal role in shaping our students’ futures and the trajectory of the school.

In many ways, principals set the vision for a school. Their responsibilities include equipping their educators with high-quality instructional materials and effective teaching strategies. As leaders in a virtual school, UVA’s principals face unique challenges.

“You have to know the technology enough to support and model for the teachers,” said middle school principal Brandy Garrett. “You also have to know enough to explain all UVA offers to families and set up education plans for students.”

Ms. Garrett is UVA’s newest principal, stepping in to lead the middle school in July 2024. She has worked in education for over 20 years. You can read more about Ms. Garrett here.

At UVA, principals also represent their teams to district leadership. They must always collaborate and stay in contact with their educators to create the best virtual learning space for both students and teachers.

Sharon Sims, UVA’s high school principal, is a tireless advocate for her educators. “Ms. Sims is one of the most compassionate leaders I know,” shared Harmony Tadlock, a UVA high school teacher. “She works hard to make sure our voices as teachers are heard and respected. She makes time to listen to us and act on what she hears.”

Ms. Sims’ career in education spans almost 30 years. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to UVA. You can read more about Ms. Sims here

The role of a principal is dynamic and demanding, but yields great reward. UVA’s team of principals all started as teachers and worked many years in the classroom. For Christol Williams, UVA’s elementary school principal, the hands-on engagement with students and families is still one of the best parts of the job.

“My favorite part of my role is engaging with educators, students, and families,” Williams said.  “I enjoy being able to identify ways to connect with stakeholders to identify areas and methods in which a positive impact can be made, not just educationally, but socially and emotionally as well.” You can read more about Ms. Williams here

This school year, UVA’s principals took the lead with the instructional model shift, setting the stage for creating an environment where students can thrive. Every day, principals make a difference in our learning communities by setting examples, adapting to challenges, and working towards solutions. Remember to thank your principal today.
